MOXI vs. BBL: What's the Difference and Which Is Right for Your Skin?
If you're considering laser skin rejuvenation, you've probably heard about MOXI™ and BBL® HEROic™. Both are popular treatments for improving the appearance of sun-damaged, uneven or aging skin, but they aren't the same treatment.
One of the most common questions we hear at Larimar Medspa is, “Do I need MOXI or BBL?”
The answer depends largely on what you want to improve. While there is some overlap, a simple way to understand the difference is this: BBL primarily targets unwanted color in the skin, while MOXI focuses more on resurfacing and improving overall skin tone and texture. For some people, one treatment is exactly what they need. For others, combining BBL and MOXI provides a more comprehensive approach.
What Is BBL HEROic?
BBL HEROic by Sciton is an advanced broadband light treatment that uses targeted light energy to address visible pigmentation and vascular concerns.
It is commonly used to improve the appearance of:
Sun and age spots
Freckles and unwanted pigmentation
Redness
Visible small blood vessels
Uneven or blotchy skin tone
Other visible signs of sun damage
During treatment, specific wavelengths of light are absorbed by targeted pigment or vascular structures in the skin. Depending on what is being treated, unwanted pigmentation may temporarily become darker before gradually fading or flaking away. For someone whose primary concern is brown spots, redness or uneven color, BBL may be the treatment we discuss first.
What Is MOXI?
MOXI is a gentle, non-ablative fractional laser that uses a 1927 nm wavelength to create controlled zones of treatment within the skin. Unlike BBL, which is a light-based treatment, MOXI is a true fractional laser. Sciton describes MOXI as a treatment for early signs of sun damage and aging with relatively little downtime.
At Larimar, we commonly use MOXI to address:
Uneven skin tone
Rough or uneven texture
Dull-looking skin
Fine lines
Enlarged pores
Superficial pigmentation
Early signs of sun damage
MOXI is also commonly described as a “prejuvenation” treatment because it can be used by people who aren't necessarily trying to correct advanced skin aging but want to improve and maintain overall skin quality.
MOXI vs. BBL: The Simplest Way to Think About It
If the first thing you notice when you look in the mirror is brown spots or redness, BBL may be the more appropriate starting point. If what bothers you most is texture, dullness, pores, fine lines or overall skin quality, MOXI may be more appropriate. But skin doesn't always fall neatly into one category.
Many people have a combination of pigmentation and textural changes. Years of sun exposure, for example, can leave behind both visible discoloration and changes in the skin's texture. That's where combining the two technologies can be especially useful.
Can You Combine BBL and MOXI?
Yes. At Larimar, BBL HEROic and MOXI can be performed during the same treatment session when appropriate.
The treatments complement one another because they work differently. BBL can address unwanted pigmentation and redness, while MOXI resurfaces the skin to improve texture, tone and overall skin quality. Rather than choosing between correcting color or improving texture, an appropriate combination treatment allows us to address both concerns as part of one personalized treatment plan. Sciton also specifically identifies MOXI and BBL HEROic as complementary technologies.
What Is the Downtime After BBL?
BBL is generally considered a low-downtime treatment, although your experience will depend on the treatment settings and what we're addressing.
You may experience temporary warmth, redness or mild swelling after treatment. When brown pigmentation is targeted, those areas often become temporarily darker before gradually fading or flaking.
This is an expected part of the treatment response and is one reason we recommend planning BBL around vacations, special events and significant sun exposure.
What Is the Downtime After MOXI?
MOXI recovery looks a little different.
Immediately after treatment, the skin may appear pink or red and feel warm. Over the following days, the skin can develop a dry, rough or sandpaper-like texture as treated skin naturally renews.
How noticeable the recovery period is depends partly on the intensity of the treatment. Sciton characterizes MOXI as a treatment with little-to-no downtime, although visible skin changes during the renewal process can still occur.
We'll give you specific post-treatment instructions based on your treatment and skin.
What About Sun Exposure?
Sun exposure matters with laser and light treatments. Your provider will ask about recent sun exposure and tanning when determining whether and when treatment is appropriate. It's also important to protect treated skin from the sun following treatment. If you're planning a beach vacation or other period of significant sun exposure, tell your laser technician during your consultation so your treatments can be scheduled appropriately.
Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is also an important part of protecting your skin and maintaining the improvements achieved with either treatment.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
There isn't one treatment plan that's appropriate for everyone.
At Larimar, we commonly recommend a series of three BBL treatments, three MOXI treatments, or three combined treatments spaced approximately four weeks apart for optimal results, but your individual treatment plan may vary depending on your skin, concerns and goals.
After completing an initial series, periodic maintenance treatments may be recommended to help maintain your results.
So, Is MOXI or BBL Better?
Neither treatment is simply “better” than the other. They do different jobs.
If pigmentation and redness are your primary concerns, BBL may make more sense. If you're more concerned about texture, pores, fine lines or overall skin renewal, MOXI may be the better fit. And when both color and texture are concerns, combining the two may offer a more comprehensive approach.
The important part is choosing the treatment based on your skin rather than choosing a device because it's popular.
