How Many Laser Hair Removal Treatments Do You Need?
If you're considering laser hair removal, one of your first questions is probably: How many treatments will I need?
At Larimar Medspa, we typically recommend 8–10 laser hair removal treatments for most areas to achieve optimal long-term hair reduction. However, there isn't one number that's right for everyone. Your hair color and thickness, skin type, treatment area, hormones and even where individual hairs are in their growth cycle can influence how many sessions you need.
Understanding why multiple treatments are necessary makes the process—and the importance of completing your treatment series—much easier to understand.
Why Does Laser Hair Removal Take Multiple Treatments?
The answer comes down to the hair growth cycle.
At any given time, the hairs in a treatment area aren't all at the same stage of growth. Laser hair removal is most effective when hair is in its active growth, or anagen, phase. Because only a portion of the hair is in that phase during any one appointment, a single treatment can't effectively target every follicle. That's why treatments are performed as a series. Each appointment gives us another opportunity to target hairs as they enter the appropriate growth phase.
Think of laser hair removal as a process rather than a one-time treatment.
What Can Affect the Number of Treatments You Need?
Several factors can influence your treatment series.
Hair color and thickness: Laser hair removal works by targeting pigment in the hair. The characteristics of your hair can therefore influence how it responds to treatment.
Treatment area: Hair growth patterns aren't identical throughout the body. Facial hair, underarm hair, bikini-area hair and leg hair may respond differently.
Skin type: Your skin tone is one of the factors considered when selecting appropriate laser settings and developing your treatment plan.
Hormones: Hormonal influences can affect hair growth, particularly on certain areas of the face and body. Some people may therefore require additional treatments or maintenance over time.
Hair growth cycle: Because only hairs in the appropriate growth phase can be effectively targeted during a particular session, consistency with your recommended treatment schedule matters.
Will You See a Difference After the First Treatment?
You may begin noticing changes after your first treatment, but don't expect all of the hair to disappear at once.
Following treatment, some hairs may appear to continue growing for several days. In many cases, what looks like new growth is actually treated hair gradually shedding.
At Larimar, we tell clients that shedding commonly occurs approximately three to seven days after treatment. As you progress through your treatment series, you may notice less hair returning and remaining hair becoming easier to manage.
Why Is Staying on Schedule Important?
Spacing treatments appropriately helps us work with the natural hair-growth cycle.
Waiting for additional hairs to enter an active growth phase gives the laser another opportunity to target follicles that weren't responsive during your previous appointment. Your Larimar laser technician will recommend when you should return based on the treatment area and your individual response rather than using exactly the same schedule for everyone.
Can You Shave Between Laser Hair Removal Treatments?
Yes—and shaving is the method we recommend if you need to remove hair between appointments.
What you should avoid is waxing or tweezing.
Waxing and tweezing remove the hair from the follicle. Laser hair removal relies on the hair's pigment to help deliver energy to the follicle, so removing the hair from the root can interfere with the treatment process. Shaving cuts the hair at the surface without pulling it from the follicle, making it compatible with your laser hair removal series. Larimar's current treatment guidance permits shaving between appointments while advising against waxing and plucking.
Is Laser Hair Removal Permanent?
This is an important distinction.
We describe laser hair removal as providing long-term or permanent hair reduction, rather than promising that every treated hair will be gone forever.
After completing a treatment series, some hair can eventually return. When it does, it may be finer or less noticeable than it was previously. Hormonal changes can also influence future hair growth, particularly in certain areas. This is why maintenance treatments a few times per year are recommended.
Does Laser Hair Removal Work on Different Skin Tones?
Technology matters.
Larimar uses the CERVELLO laser hair removal system, which incorporates three wavelengths—755 nm, 805 nm and 1064 nm—along with a double-cooling system. The platform is designed to accommodate a range of skin types and hair depths while improving treatment comfort.
Your laser technician evaluates your skin and hair characteristics and selects treatment parameters accordingly.
What Areas Can Be Treated?
Laser hair removal can be used on many areas of the face and body.
At Larimar, common treatment areas include the face, legs, arms, underarms, back, chest and bikini area, among others.
Whether you're tired of shaving your legs, dealing with frequent bikini-area maintenance or frustrated by unwanted facial hair, the treatment plan can be tailored to the area you're treating.
When Is the Best Time to Start Laser Hair Removal?
Because laser hair removal requires a series of appointments over time, it's better to think ahead rather than wait until immediately before a vacation or special event.
Sun exposure is also an important consideration. The American Academy of Dermatology advises avoiding tanning and protecting the skin from the sun as part of laser hair removal preparation and aftercare. If you have upcoming travel or expect significant sun exposure, tell your laser technician so your treatment schedule can be planned appropriately.
